The first VideoMarathon took place in Øksnehallen in Copenhagen on August 17th – 19th 2001, and from the very beginning it was an international event with participants from Sweden, Norway and Germany. Out of 400 applicants, 120 contestants were chosen. 40 computers were set up and ready for the 48 hour-long film competition, where the participants had to shoot and edit a 3 - 5 minute film, according to a given subject. The subject, which the many contestants had to work with, was “Denmark”. All the films were later shown on the Danish TV-channel TV2 Zulu and put on the Internet. The event ended with an award show in the Grand Theatre in Copenhagen on Saturday September 8th.
The winner was the 33 year-old Céline Sørensen, who won a trip for two to Hollywood, including car and hotel, and an iMac computer for editing. Céline Sørensen is a mother of two and had almost no previous experience with video production.
