VideoMarathon started as a Danish event , then it became Scandianvian and now we would like to make it into a European Event!
The idea is for participants to make a film on a single topic in 48 hours. At the start, the subject is revealed, which is secret, and then the participants have to shoot and edit their film themselves. VideoMarathon hs been widely supported by the Danish Film Institute, the City of Copenhagen, the County of Copenhagen and LO.
In addition, the event was supported by a number of private companies, including Politiken, Apple Computer, Øksnehallen, Nordisk Film, Yahoo, Y&R, Zentropa, TDC. As well as several TV stations including DR TV, SVT, TV2 Norway, MTV Nordic, TV 1000.
VideoMarathon was held in Copenhagen to start off with and then in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo at the same time.
Participants need only bring a video camera – computers will be set up for editing. Throughout the process, participation is made as simple as possible, the idea being that everyone should be able to take part.
The jury consists of renowned film and TV professionals. In terms of design, there is free choice. Films are judged on how well they deal with the subject, whether or not actors are used. Participants in the VideoMarathon are individuals. That is, the entrant is credited as both director and editor; only that person may be present during the editing. Both actors and other helpers are allowed during the filming. In this way, a participant can easily have a large crew to help out.
The idea was born in 2000 as the first of its kind in the world, it was described in the national Danish paper Jyllandsposten in December 2020 and anchorman behind VideoMarathon is filmmaker David Peter Fox who got the event started with organiser Martin Gibskov Bruun and Engineer Jan Jensen as well as several other volunteers who put a lot of effort into the project. Many, many others helped to make the project possible in the following 12 years.
